Putting this here to help anyone else who needs it. I see lots of talk about running containers on your Synology, but not a lot of help in understanding how to operate the Container Manager to install and update pihole.
To install pihole on Synology NAS:
- Find and install Container Manager through Package Center
- Start Container Manager and go to Registry on left nav
- go to the search bar and type pihole
- highlight pihole, click on the download button...wait for it to finish
- create a new Project
- use the newly downloaded pihole:pihole/latest image
- update details/settings
- set gateway
- set IP address
- check ports include 53 UDP, 53 TCP, 67 UDP, 8080 or 8081 TCP for web interface
- Click on the Actions menu, and click Build
Update:
In Container Manager- Go to Registry in the left nav
- you'll see that pihole/pihole has an "Update available" link, click to update
In Container Manager
- Stop the container
- Go to Registry in the left nav
- go to the Search bar and type pihole. pihole/pihole will show up in the search results
- click on the Download button and leave defaults to download "latest"...wait for it to finish
- Go to the Project,
- click on the pihole project
- click on Actions, click on Build
- Go back to the Registry, click on "Remove Unused..."
